Plumbing in Kensington
Daceyville, inside this service area, is Australia's first government-planned garden suburb. The NSW Housing Board began it in 1912 on Crown land, laid out as a model workers' estate with its own shops, parks, school and police station, and it is now a Heritage Conservation Area. It was built as rental housing for a single landlord. It no longer has one, and that is the thing that shapes most of what we do here. My hot water system failed and it isn't that old. Why?
Soft water is why. Scale is what finishes tanks in hard-water regions and Sydney is not one. Here the sacrificial anode gets consumed protecting the steel, then the tank begins corroding, or an element fails. Both are frequently repairable.
Why do you ask who owns the house before you ask what is wrong?

Do you work on heritage and conservation-area homes?
A good part of this area sits in the Daceyville Garden Suburb Heritage Conservation Area, which came about after residents formed a preservation society and, with Builders Labourers Federation green bans, saw off a redevelopment plan. Practically it means external change is constrained, so a fix that would be routine a few streets away may not be available. Council is the authority on what is permitted, not us.
The estate was built as one scheme. Does that change what is under the ground?
It can. Services on a planned estate were laid out estate-wide rather than negotiated lot by lot, because in 1912 the whole thing had a single owner and there was nobody to negotiate with. So what runs where does not always follow the boundaries a modern owner would assume. It is not a problem in itself, it is simply a reason to look rather than to presume.
